Guest Crew Experience

Live the Life of a Traditional Tall Ship Sailor

  • No Experience Needed - Just Enthusiasm

Join the crew of the schooner Appledore for a 2–4 day working passage across the Great Lakes. This immersive, hands-on experience is designed for adventurous individuals who want to sail, learn, and contribute—not just observe. You’ll eat, sleep, and work alongside the crew, and your level of involvement will match your interest and ability. Training will be provided, similar to our Windward Bound youth sail program, and safety is always our top priority.

  • Join a Legacy of Great Lakes Sailors

Whether you’re curious about life at sea, considering formal sail training, or simply want to experience something truly unique, this program offers an unforgettable taste of maritime tradition.

In the age of sail, before modern trains and freighters, all cargo was hauled throughout the Great Lakes using schooners just like Appledore IV. During the peak of sailing, some historians claim there were over 8,000 vessels registered in Bay City alone.

By sailing with us aboard Appledore IV, you’re stepping into that legacy—reviving the skills, stories, and spirit of a time when schooners ruled the waterways. Your time on board not only connects you to this rich maritime past but also helps carry forward our mission to educate and inspire the next generation of Great Lakes stewards.

  • Keep the Adventurous Spirit Alive

This program is for those who feel the call of the wind and waves—the ones drawn to challenge, discovery, and the rhythm of life at sea. Sailing aboard Appledore isn’t just about learning knots or standing watch; it’s about keeping the adventurous spirit alive in a world that often moves too fast to notice the horizon. Out here, every sunrise on open water and every shift at the helm connects you to something timeless. It’s a rare chance to unplug, push your boundaries, and rediscover what it means to live with purpose and curiosity.
